Course description
Chem. 51 is an introductory class in general chemistry and is designed for students in the following majors: Nursing, Allied Health Sciences; Dietetics, Physical Therapy, Food Science & Environmental & Occupational Health. This course may also be taken to satisfy the Physical Science requirement for General Education. Chemistry 51 at LA Mission College is equivalent to Chemistry 103 or Chemistry 105 at CSUN.
Prerequisites and exclusion from the course
- Mathematics 115 (Elementary Algebra) with a grade of "C" or better, or appropriate placement results.
- College regulations state that a student may be excluded from a course following accumulation absences equal to a week of course work.
- Adhere to Academic Calendar 2018-2019 for Administrative Issues.
After completing this class you will be able to:
- Conceptualize, model and explain chemical processes qualitatively at the molecular level.
- Express mathematically and solve quantitative chemical problems.
- Extract appropriate information, analyze and synthesize experimental results to reach correct conclusions.
- Perform laboratory techniques safely and accurately and maintain a laboratory notebook according to standard scientific guidelines.
- Represent and interpret data graphically.

Textbooks and homework access
- Textbook: ‘General, organic and biological chemistry; structure of life’’ by K.C. Timberlake, you may purchase/borrow any edition of that textbook.
- Laboratory Manual: Procedures for the labs are posted on our Canvas Class.
The Periodic Table: The PT is posted on our Canvas class. Print it out and bring to class every time.
Basic scientific calculator: You should have access to a basic scientific calculator (required), for example a TI-30X IIS. PROGRAMMABLE OR GRAPHING CALCULATORS OR ANY DEVICE WITH COMMUNICATIONS CAPABILITY, SUCH AS A CELLPHONE, TABLET OR LAPTOP IS NOT ALLOWED TO DO CALCULATIONS.
Attendance: You are expected to attend every class. Attendance means you should arrive on time, be willing to participate in class discussions and be prepared. As a minimum, you should read through the appropriate textbook and/or lecture material before class. Disruptive students will be asked to leave.
You may not audio or video record the class in any way without my permission. The use of computers, tablets, cell phones are not allowed in class unless otherwise stated.

Academic Integrity: Academic dishonesty is not acceptable. If you use material from an electronic or other sites you are required to cite it properly. IF OTHERWISE STATED, EVERYTHING YOU TURN IN FOR COURSE CREDIT MUSTBE YOUR OWN WORK.

Your assignment will be subject to a failing grade and the Dean of Students will be notified for possible further action.

No make up for labs will be possible. Please set your schedule accordingly to this course meeting time.
- Safety Goggles (you may purchase them in the bookstore or from any other sources) are mandatory in the lab.
- You need to bring to class the respective lab procedure. The lab procedures are available on our Canvas class in module Laboratory ""
- You need to have a lab-notebook and bring to every laboratory period. The lab notebook is a quadrille paper, hard cover "Comp Book" and you must have it by the second class meeting. The details of the lab notebook organization and keeping up are provided on our Canvass class in the module "Laboratory". You will only be allowed to use your lab-notebook during laboratory tests.
- Wearing goggles and following laboratory safety procedures will be strictly enforced.
- Attire:
You must wear pants that cover ankles.
No skirts are allowed-unless required by Religious/Cultural reasons; they have to be long enough to cover ankles
You must wear closed toed & closed heeled shoes. Sandals, high-heel etc., shoes, are not
permitted in the lab. Tank tops and shorts are not allowed in the lab.
Long hair need to be tied back and secured.

LAB REPORTS AND GRADES
Lab reports need to be submitted at beginning of the next laboratory exercise. The grade will be directly posted to your Canvas grades.
Each laboratory report is worth of 10 points if not otherwise stated.
If you miss a laboratory class you will receive 0 points (lab make up is not possible)
Late reports will not be accepted and graded.

Notes related to absences on tests
- There will be 3 one-class period multiple-choice examinations focused on specific parts of the material and one 2 h cumulative multiple-choice final examination.
- You will score 0 for any missed examination unless you contact me with a LEGITIMATE, DOCUMENTED REASON FOR AN UNFORESEEN AND UNAVOIDABLE ABSENCE.
Acceptable reasons for excused absences include injury or significant illness (with a doctor's note), military duty (with signed orders), jury duty (with jury notice), or traffic accident (with police report). Documentation must be presented to me at the next class you are able to attend.
Unacceptable reasons for excused absences include transportation delays, vehicle breakdowns, oversleeping, vacation plans, family commitments, or work commitments.

It is your responsibility to check your examination schedule: you will not be allowed to take an early or late "make-up" examination. YOU WILL BE ALLOWED TO TAKE AN EXAMINATION ONLY ONCE and cannot appeal afterwards to retake it because you felt your performance was impaired for some undisclosed reason.
